What do you do to help you feel more secure while DH is deployed?

For me, my dog helps me feel more secure. She is a true watch dog and very protective of us. I wanted a dog for just this reason. Her growl would scare the pi$$ out of anyone that tried to break in here. Living on base helps too.


Have you ever been too scared/worried to turn off the lights or go to bed alone?

I keep my bathroom light on at night and a fan in our room. I just like being able to see and the fan kills the silence so I can fall asleep.

My dh is not military, but he does travel often. One thing I did was to block all unknown callers. It may sound weird, but having my phone ring with no one there or a blocked call made me nervous. Then, one night when he was gone, I had someone call and ask for me by name (long after I had gone to bed!). When I asked who it was, he said, "It's Mike!", like I should know him. Well, I don't know a Mike, so I hung up. Forty five minutes later, he called back again! This went on for hours until he finally apologized and said he had gotten my name and number on a **** site...and gave me the name of the site! Well, I looked, and it IS a real site. I didn't go any further, though. The last thing he said to me, after he apologized was this, "Can I ask you a favor, though? Can you tell me one thing?"........"Does it turn you on for me to be here naked while I talk to you?"!!!! OMG. GROSS!!!!!!!!!!! So, the next day, I called the phone company and had them block all unknown name or blocked call phone calls. It has done a lot to my self security issues!!
Another thing I did was to make sure that all windows and doors were covered in some fashion. We have tall glass windows on either side of our door AND a half glass door. I put frosted contact paper up on all of it...and it looks like it came that way. I only left a small circle in the middle of the glass door (it is made like a stained glass window is, and a flower is in the middle with a perfect circle in the flower center...the circle I cut fits that circle exactly!) for me to see out when someone knocks.

I get really, really freaked out when DH is away. I did 18 months and at the end of it I was pretty used to it. Now we live in a new house in the country and when he is gone i leave ALL THE LIGHTS ON in the house, except in my room and the girls room. And I keep them in bed with me. I keep my cell phone under my pillow and a knife as well. I know it sounds crazy, but with all these home invasions and crazy people out there you can never be too careful....

As a single woman I deal with this as well. One thing that has helped me was to put a couple of lights on timers in the house. The lights come on whether I'm home or not and I have one set to turn off in the living room a while after I go to bed. This way I think the house looks more lived in. I also make sure to check every door and lock before going to bed. Some nights I sleep with the cordless phone on the bed next to me if I'm feeling really insecure.

When my husband was in Doha I put the small window alarms on all of my windows and doors. There are 2 piece that sit side by side touching one another. If the contact is broken a LOUD shrilling alarm sounds. They only cost about $3 for a pack of two.

My DH works out of town at least 3 weeks a month so I'm home alone a lot with the kids. We had a alarm system installed as soon as we moved in.
