Each week my daughters first grade class gets 10 spelling words that are tested on Friday.

Last Monday was a holiday, no school. Kayla went to school Tuesday, got sick Tuesday night and barely moved off the couch from Tuesday night till Saturday. On Sunday she seemed to do a complete turnaround. She insisted on going to school on Monday, and has been pretty much fine since except for the sniffles.

Her teacher gave her the spelling test Monday morning. Not surprisingly, she failed it, 5 out of 10 wrong. Not exactly possible to study when you are sleeping 18 out of 24 hours you know?

I don't know if I should just let it go or if I should ask for her to be able to take a retest. Any advice? I don't want to be a difficult parent but this just doesn't seem right.

I would explain that your dd was sick and ask to have a retest. Maybe there is a policy like the lowest 2 scores are thrown out, then it might not matter.

I would call and ask the teacher about it.

I agree, just ask. I know when my son was out, the teacher thought he just was ill w/sniffles and could do homework. Different kids get sick differently - mine had a fever near 105, so he was truly out of it. I found our teachers very helpful when needed.

I would ask but if it's not possible you shouldn't feel bad. I'm assuming she was not in school those days she was sick but it is standard practice at our school to get all missed tests done right away.

I think I am missing something??
My son had something similar happen and he took the test on the day he return. He missed some words- though the test is always repeated on Friday.

I would talk with the teacher- I do not think she would be excepted to pass- it just shows the words she needs to study and do they not retest at the end of the week?

I'd talk to the teacher about it. We missed a week of school and DD missed the 4th six weeks spelling test and as far as I know, she still hasn't made it up and has been back for a week.

Right, out of 4 days of school last week she was only there for the first day. Thanks for the advice, I know a lot of parents can be really overbearing these days and I'm scared of being one of them, especially since my daughter has ADD.

There is no retest, she was given Fridays test that she missed when she returned to school the following Monday, after missing 3 out of the 4 school days the previous week. I had no idea till it came home today.

Talk to the teacher. I also teach first grade, and I would have given her the spelling test when she returned as well. I assume she was there on Tuesday to get the week's words. Her teacher would have had no idea that she was so ill and was unable to study them for the entire rest of the week. We're a lot of things, but we're not mindreaders. Kids are sick all the time, with varying illnesses. Just contact her and let her know what was going on. In the future, please feel free to contact your teacher and let her know how your child is when she is sick. Teachers really do care.
