Ds had to get glasses when he was 4 1/2 so he was younger. He actually was excited at first because I wear glasses. Maybe point out someone she admires with glasses. I might get flak for this, but we always tell ds that glasses make people look smart, because in *my* opinion they do. So we used that one too. (Dh prefers me in my glasses, we are both book nerdy and he loves me in my glasses).
Here are a few pointers I've found helpful:
~ Always, always ALWAYS get the two pairs for one price deal. You will be amazed how many times they will get scratched, bent, and otherwise ruined. If you have at LEAST one spare you will be covered at all times. We have taken ds to get his glasses bent back into place at least 6 times and he's had them only about a year. And truth be told he probably needs them straightened more like once a month because kids are HARD on glasses, and ds is really really careful with them. Things happen and they will.
~ Get the 'insurance' plan. It is a certain charge that no matter what happens, they will be replaced or repaired for free. It more than makes up for the cost. If a lens is scratched and you have not paid this extra fee, they will NOT replace a lens for you, they make you get a new pair of glasses and you are going to be paying much more for that pair of glasses than you would for that extra $. I think ours was $30. GET IT!!
~ I'd definitely do some role playing or sceanarios before she goes to school in them. We coached ds before he went to school. He loved the glasses but on the first day going to school with them he balked saying the kids would laugh at him. I told them to let them laugh, and then say right to their faces, holding his head high that "they help me to see" and leave it at that. When we went to the grocery store we met one of our neighbor's kids and (he's a few years older) and the said jokingly, "Hey, what's up with the glasses?" My son raised his chin to this kid and said proudly, "Well, they help me SEE". This kid got all round eyed and shut up. Then my son smiled proudly at me. They DO listen!!!!
Hope these suggestions help. If you are anything like us glasses are a necessary evil. They are a pain, kids can do so much harm by falling, oh just everything. Like I said, ds is Very careful with them and they still get abused big time. You just have to get over it. Oh, and we are on our 2nd set of 2 pairs of glasses. They go through them quickly. Don't be surprised!!
