What they require of kids starting Kindergarten? Dh's oldest daughter starts in a couple of months and I was wondering what was going to be expected for her to already know so that I can try working with her in those areas. Preferably Mississippi's guidelines since that is where she will be attending.

Probably differs state to state...my kids attend a private school, so I'm not sure if that is different from the public system. You might be able to find something more concrete online in terms of guidelines. Also teachers on this board might be able to give you specifics...
From what I remember, they asked my kids their basic colors, shapes, had them write their name, draw a person, count to 25...hmmm...not sure what else.
If your child is in preschool, they might be able to give you some good information as well!
Good luck!

Darn it...you used to be able to 'edit' your posts and I seem to be able to in other threads on other forums, maybe they just need to turn that option 'on' for this forum?
Anyhow, I just remembered...fine motor skills, like for example, can you child use scissors?

She goes to preschool with her mom, but not here. That is why I was looking at the requirements, because I want to work with her here. I may have to get Dh to ask what they are teaching her there. When we ask Dd she just says they play and color

Sorry for my serial posting...I can't edit! ARGH!
I'm just telling you my experience and my child did not know the alphabet, how to count up to 100 (or more) and all their shapes, colors etc I'm not sure if that is actually required, all I know is that they were asked. I'm just not sure how well a child does, how that factors into the kindergarten 'screening' process.

I would call the school and ask, since even different schools within a district like seeing certain things. DS' school told me not to worry, as they would teach anything he was lacking, but I still wanted him prepared. They still tested on patterns, colors, counting, making an X, etc. The big thing was being able to sit still and listen, and take direction.

There's a book I got from Amazon that covers this exact topic. It's called Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten! by Linda Desimowich and Stacey Kannenberg. It's an actual book, not a workbook. It recommends the following:
Share, take turns and listen quietly
Wait patiently and use words to communicate
Recognize and know your full name
Know your parents' and/or caregiver's first and last name
Use toilet by yourself
Dress yourself
Know how to zip, snap, tie, button and fasten your clothing
Recite and recognize alphabet letters
Recognize your left and right hand
Know basic colors, shapes and number 0-20
Recognize a penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar bill
Use positional words (over, under, up, down)
Print your first name, uppercase for first letter only
Know your address and phone number
Know how to use a pencil, crayons, glue and scissors
It also covers rhyming, body parts, five senses, sight words, telling time, parts of a story, and the calendar. We also have the one for first grade. This book is way better than a workbook IMO because it's not about doing worksheets. It's about reading and talking about these subjects.
