mommysparkles wow! you rock!
I love your attitude and totally agree with you. My ds is only in kG, so I have some time I hope for homework, but I will keep this phylisophy in mind when the time comes!
Thanks

my dh would totally agree with you, mommysparkles
I have a slightly different view.
I'm not anti-homework, but i am anti- too much homework
in kindergarten, my dd had homework twice a week that took 10-15min. in first grade that changed, to 3 or 4 pages a day, and spelling words twice a week, and expected to read 20minutes a day. it took 1.5hrs a day to do her homework usually, and that is entirely too much for any grade imo, especially a first grader. I finally said screw it, she would spend 30 minutes on her homework after that she can continue or go on to playing whether finished or not. and we would read befor bed for 10-20min, depending on the book, and that's it.
in 2nd grade she has 2 pages of homework a night usually, and is supposed to read 30min a night, and spelling words once a week. we still have 30min for homework. at bedtme i go in to read for 1-20min, and she can read as long as she wants after that
I always encourage ger to do all her homework, but i won't make her past a reasonable time frame, as she gets older, the time willexpand, but atths point, 30min should be plenty

I, too, am not anti-homework (I want to know what is being taught and how my children are comprehending and getting along, plus the reinforcement of info), but am anti-homework overload, as are many, many these days. However, until we stop being intimidated by the school administration and start speaking up as parents, united, it will just keep getting worse. This is one reason I choose not to go back to work: I want to be able to help my child. But how do kids do homework, get enough sleep, eat a family dinner AND participate in sports, music, etc.? How on earth do parents who both work help with homework and not keep their kids up late, without the parents doing the work themselves? It just seems so crazy.

Maybe it has to do with your dd being in 4th grade. I have a friend whose ds had tons of homework everynight when he was in 4th grade. The teacher said it was because of the proficiency tests they have to take in 4th grade.

My ds is in 4th this year, he's only been in school two days so he hasn't had homework yet. The teacher said he would have homework M-TH and not over the weekends and it should take about 45 minutes to do. I can handle that. I actually don't mind him bringing home homework, then I can see what he is learning and I know that he has it done. What always concerns me, is him getting the work done he needs to in school. That is his downfall. And instead of the teacher making a phone call to the parent letting them know there is a problem with him using his time wisely in school...they've just let it go and then I hear about it at the parent/teacher conference. Drives me crazy!!

Or offering to read an essay they've written to give feedback. Or let them practice giving a speech to you before they do in class. I totally agree. I think that homework has a place but I don't think grade school children should be doing hours and hours of homework, that seems over the top. We haven't had this problem at all, thankfully, our school give reasonable amts of homework I think. If it was happening to take hours and hours and my child was struggling, I'd stop in and talk to his teacher.

My kids are in 4th grade and they have a LOT of homework, have had a lot since grade K. we spend about 2 hrs. per night on homework, not counting time spent on reports and studying for tests. it's really too much but is the norm here. I really hate it. I read an article that said the increased amt. of hmwrk. is due to the no child left behind act.
