All 4 of my kids have a 9:00 bedtime on school nights. This includes 16 YO DS. ALthough most nights I do not raise a stink if they read in their beds for 30 minutes or so, just so they are in their beds and not raising the roof.

DS just thinks this is cruel since "all" his friends don't have a bedtime at all. But as I have repeatedly told my kids, this house is a kingdom run by the queen (me) and the king (DH). The children are the prince and princess's of the kingdom, and they must follow the rules of the king and queen. Every kingdom has its own rules and therefore I do not have any control over the kingdom down the street, nor does that kingdom have any control over my kingdom. In otherwords, they live in a monarchy, not a democracy. Someday they will leave home and form their own kingdom and their own rules, until then though, defying a 9:00 bedtime can result in the queen having the little prince or princess beheaded. LOL

Joking aside, the reason for the early bedtime isn't just an issue of a bad case of crabbies the next day, it is also there because after 9:00 is considered my time. Time for me to recoop, finish chores, or spend time with DH alone.

My SS is now 15 1/2 and bed is 10PM. Last night he complained that he should be able to stay up until 10:30PM - nope. On weekends he can stay up until 11PM if he doesn't have a game on Saturday or Sunday. During the week he is responsible for getting himself up, showering, eating breakfast and getting to his carpool before 7AM. If he forgets homework he has to go to bed earlier for the rest of the week. He is still all about play. He is now in ROTC and will deal with his Sgt. Major three times a week.

I send both of my girls to bed at 9:30. They don't have to be up until 7am.

My twins will be 12 this fall. They will be having a bedtime of 8:45 this school year. I'm trying to respect the fact that they are now in middle school, so they were given an extra 15 minutes than last school year. This still gives them 9 hours of sleep. My ds usually takes about 10 min to fall asleep, his room is in the basement and it's quieter. He wakes up every morning with a smile on his face, never complaining. My dd's room is across the hall from ours and sometimes I think our TV or conversations keep her up 'cuz she's always trying to eavesdrop. It takes her about 30 min to fall asleep. She, on the otherhand, is the morning crab and slow as molasses.
