My kids are readers!!!! We were at the library today (go once a week) and my 9 yr old checked out 4 large books, they will be done by next Monday! He is very well known at the library now and frequently puts books on hold or orders them from other libraries. All 4 of my school aged kids read at least 2 grades above grade level. How did I get so lucky with these kids!! I used to think it was a taught thing, but my oldest dd would rather do anything but read, and has never been a good reader. I don't know what I am doing different with these kids then I did with her?

Congratulations! I think school is easier for kids if they enjoy reading. My 3 year old will let me read to her for an hour or more, she just sits on my lap and soaks it up. My 6 year old will read to me about 20 minutes/day from the easy readers (Green Light, Scholastic Readers, Bob books, etc).

I think some of it is which teachers they have in school as well. My mom said I developed a love for reading in the 3rd grade.

Sheryl, you bring up a great point. I always thought it was a learned love also. However, I read a lot, my dd reads constantly, and my dh always has a book going, but my ds does not like to read. He did before he went into kindergarten and during the first part of kindergarten, but now he HATES to read to us. He loves to be read to though.

Both my kiddos absolutely love to read! My ds even chooses to go to bed early rather than staying up a bit later just so that he can spend his time in bed reading rather than watching a movie or whatnot. My ds has always loved books from the time he was little and would just sit and let people read to him for hours. My dd on the other hand loves to read but doesnt like to sit and be read to. We try and try but she will only make it about half way through a book but she will sit in her room for hours by herself and "read" her books. Either way, I am glad that they love to read.

I have "reader" glasses for myself but neither of my girls like to read. And I LOVE to read. Nothing is better than getting lost in a good book!!!
