Help! My kids are so destructive. My dd1 broke her bed on Satyrday by jumping on it. They reck toys, books, the blinds on their windows.... you get the picture. I have punished them, taken toys away, said I'm not going to buy them anything else. They don't seem to care. They just keep recking their stuff. What else can I do, I can't afford to keep replacing things.
TIA.

I don't know how old they are, and I don't know how you feel about corporal punishment, but I would get really firm with consequences. I would be immediate and consistent with standing in the corner, spanks, removal of privileges/toys, and/or making them do extra clean up to see how hard it is to take care of things. We would be learning about respect of people and possessions. I'm sorry because I know that would be so stressful for you.

I have to agree with Jeanette!! Immediate and consistant consequences. Do not threaten something and not follow through!! Your dd would be sleeping on the floor if she were at my house!!!

Funny that you posted this, just yesterday my son (7) had a tantrum and went upstairs and completely destroyed his room. Toys and stuff everywhere. So my dh calls his (my sons) dad and tells him what he's doing. My son talks to him on the phone and his dad tells him to clean up his room and stop being bad. Then i get the phone back and he tells me to tell him if he doesnt straighten out that he will not be going fishing with him on Wednesday.

So then I get off the phone, go to bring laundry upstairs and yell "you better shut that door so I dont see what you did and you better clean up your room, you have 30 minutes"

I hear his whining and stuff then I tell him: you dad said no fishing on wed unless the room is clean.

10 min later, I go up there cause he tells me his room is cleaned up. I check it and its not too bad. A few toys left out. Dh seen it before it was cleaned and he said it was real bad, you couldnt even open the door.

So all you can do is either take away toys, not buy any when youre in the store with them and remind them of what they have done to their old toys, just simple punishment.

I'm confuse. Where are you and what are you doing when they are jumping on the bed or generally destroying things. Do you go to stop them and they ignore you?

my ds is destructive as well, he is 3 and constantly breaking toys!! i have told him to stop and he will not get anymore and he doesn't, he is getting pretty low on trucks and tractors cuz he keeps breaking them, i have caught him jumping on the bed, that is an immediate corner, and second offense is a spank and time out. its pretty much the only thing i can do to them. my ds does these things when he is playing and i am cleaning, i don't have my eye on them every second of every day, and he does some not so good stuff.

I was in the kitchen making dinner the day she broke her bed. I had asked DH to check on the rowdiness and he waited to long. She got a spanking and a time out.

Do they have ADD? This was a warning sign for a son of a friend of mine. He was extremely destructive from day 1 and it turned out to be part of his disorder.

Also do they have too many toys? Do you follow through on not buying them any more? This same friend would replace everything her ds broke (he broke EVERYTHING within minutes of getting it).

As a last resort - I'd start charging THEM if they broke something. Say they broke a toy worht $10. Then would then owe me $10 worth of work around the house to pay for that item - not replacing it either. They might be much more careful with stuff if you make them do that.

my dd broke our PS2 a few years ago. it was for everyone to use and she decided to cram a video game in there and it broke something on the inside.... so her punishment was, that she was going to buy a new PS2 for everyone with what she would have gotten for christmas. Yes, she was mad that she wasn't getting anything for herself for christmas, but our new PS2 has been around for about 6 years, and it's still working. when my kids break something, they have to pay to replace it, even if that means doing extra chores, cleaning gutters, mowing lawns, etc. just an idea, i dont know how old your kids are...
