So earlier this year I took my DD to kindergarten round up to get her pre registered for school and had her tested. Well today I finally got her official registration forms in to the school and I was told she will probably have to go to another school that is a mile away because they are filled up...WTF. They offered pre K and I told them no way my DD is going to be 6 in January and has 3 years of preschool behind her and is beginning to read...she is beyond needing readiness classes. The neighborhood school is 4 houses away from me and they want to possibly send my daughter a mile away for school. I told the principal he can enroll her or I will return her to Montessori School for 1 more year aka school district won't get her student $$$ from the state. I hope they get back to me tomorrow and let me know she is enrolled and don't try to send her to another school.

I thought they would give preference to neighborhood kids for enrollment but I guess not.

My first thought was, "Wow, the other school is ONLY a mile away." Around where I live, the next elementary school is several miles away. We don't have many schools and a fast rising population. Being over-populated is the norm at our schools.

But of course, that doesn't solve your problem as the school your child should be going to is only 4 houses away.

IF they try to send her to another school, I'd file a complaint with the school board and see if they can negotiate doing the right thing for your child.

BTW, if they are over crowded, they will love that you are paying tuition to send your child to Montessori. If they send your child to another school, they aren't getting the state's money anyway.

Isn't that crazy?? I thought they had to take everybody who was zoned into a school. Wow.
Our neighborhood has 3 elementary schools, all overcrowded. There are two within walking distance, and we are zoned into the one two miles away. (???) And the kicker--school starts at 8:00, the bus comes at 6:45!!! To take them 2 miles!!!!
We skipped the whole mess and put our daughter in private school. We had to cut back in alot of other ways, but its been a huge relief. And its such a shame, because we chose this school district when we moved here when ds was 3. (apparently so did everyone else--LOL)
Good luck to you. Don't let the beaurocrats push you around!

Over crowding is not an issue in our district we live in a city that is surrounded by tons of small towns. In my state you have the right to send your child to any school of your choice in your county as long as they have openings after filling their districts needs. You can also choose the school within district. I just thought priority would be given based on proximity to the school.

This is just how close we are...walk out front door to sidewalk and walk 2 houses down and cross the street and go to more houses down and enter the schools gates. I hope to hear back from them today because I want to send my daughter there not across town...and I am not willing to put her in pre K at that school when she has 3 years of preschool behind her...can read 3 letter phoentic words...can identify most numbers up to 100...knows all her letters and their common sounds...knows all her shapes and colors...can cut out almost any shape....etc

jenjoe are you from michigan? I had the same problem last week with Marshall... uugghh.. My dd is a "school of choice" student because we reside in a nearby smaller town.. HOWEVER I pay nonhomestead (more$$) taxes on 860 acres and 2 rent houses.... In her school of choice district. I should have the final choice in where my child goes...You don't even what to know what the property taxes on that are a year trust me... Our superintendant doesn't pay property taxes she lives in a condo.. One of our building principals lives out of district (violation of contract and no taxes) and has a po box as her residence.. I would like to see her fanny fit into the po box she lives in...

While my dh was fighting for placement last week I asked him if she was going to be expelled before her first day of Kintergarten. I also didn't want a huge lable on her... School of choice is confidential... and they recieve more state taxes per student.. That's why they take them..
