I was just reading in today's paper (on the internet) about the school district charging all parents $50 per day for every unexcused absence. I have a particular sore spot for this policy because when Tommy was born, the school told me under the circumstances, to send a note every time Matthew had to miss because of Tommy. After 10 days total, they cut me off and threatened me with the $50 a day and told me (in January) if he EVER missed another day of school for any reason, I would be turned over to DSS and a case of neglect would be started against my family. This was our reason to begin homeschooling, but the kicker was the principal. (I've posted this before) When I went to the school and tried to explain just how sick Tommy was, and that I was up nearly 24 hours a day with him for several days, he said "You know, I've had to stay up all night with my kids when they're sick and I still get up and go to work the next day!" I pulled Matthew out the second we got clearance from the schoolboard a week later, then joined an association so we could be severed from the schools permanently!
Yes, I think parents should make sure their kids are accounted for, however, instead of fining the parents, maybe they should investigate the reason behind the absences! For thousands of kids to be absent, it feels like the system is fractured, not thousands of parents!
