What do you think of on base housing?? We are in the process of possibly getting out of active duty national guard and into the army and I am wondering what housing is like. Lots of bases have pictures of what they are like online but I want some info from people who've lived there

Well, it has been quite a few years, but I grew up in base housing. It was pretty much all we lived in for my entire childhood and it was quite nice!! (nicer than some of the places I have lived in as an adult!!). My dad was Air Force and they used to have the reputation for having the nicest base housing (I don't know if that still holds true or not) Plus it is nice because all your neighbors are military, so it is really easy to make friends.

It depends where you going. Over here in Germany majority of the housing are old. If you get station somewhere in Germany and you're bringing American appliances you need to have a transformer. Some housing has been remodeled looks new on the outside but still old on the inside. If you are not picky I'm sure you can get a descent one. But you know how it is in the military. People live in it then they might remodel a little bit until the next family move in. Overall its still not bad but if you want to save I take what I get. I hope you get a four bedroom though. Three kids, and master bedroom. I heard in the states though are picky about that. Our friend right now in Ft. Bragg is having it hard. She have 2 sons and one daughter. All under 9 yrs old and they only qualify for 3 bedrooms because of the kids age. She is trying so hard to fight it right now. But here is the link you can find out about housing on base. Its helps a lot. Try it out. https://onestop.army.mil/ This website gives you an idea what you are looking for. There are photos and floor plan. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I don't like the politics of on base housing. That is just me.

The perks of it are:

1) immediate support system for those who have loved ones on deployments or those who have newborns, etc
2) convenience
3) security
4) rent free, utilities free

I have yet to thoroughly enjoy the base living experience....but have made some pretty good friends. It's all about what your tolerance level is and what your immediate needs are.

I agree with Christy K. We are active duty Air Force and have chosen not to live on base for the same reason. I do have friends who live on base though and they seem to enjoy it.
