My son is five years old and he poops on the potty but won't wipe himself and he's in school. We've tried getting the toilet paper ready for him and also wet wipes but he still won't do it. Can anyone suggest somethings to do to get him to do it himself. I'm afraid that if we keep after him about it he will start not going.

Well the only thing i can say is refuse to do it. After a couple of times of having a sore bum because he didn't wipe he'll learn that he best do it or his butt is not going to feel very good.

Over 12 years ago i nannied for a family. The little boy was five and for the first week he'd come home every day and run to the bathroom to poop. He would call me in to wipe his butt. After about a week i told him that's it i'm not wiping your butt anymore. He said well my mommy and daddy does it....I told him I'm not your mommy or daddy. I told him he's a big boy now and this is something that everyone has to learn how to do. I went into the bathroom and explained how to do it one last time and the next day i refused to do it. He cried and sat in there for a short time but he did it and he did a good job at it too. Never had an issue after that.

About five years later i took him and his sister out to dinner and he leans in and whispers.....I remember something that you taught me Jodie....but i shouldn't talk about it at the dinner table....I told him go ahead you can tell me.....He says you taught me how to wipe my butt.

My dd does this too. Heck, even my 10 yo ds doesn't wipe sometimes! I do still help her once in a while. I got some of those wet wipes for her to use and she really likes them. It's gotten better since I got those.

I think that it is just hard for her to reach around so she doesn't want to do it.

mY 4YO BOY went thru that and recently. He would go in to poop and when he was done he'd yell "I'm ready for you to wipe my butt" He would even assume the postion leanin gover the closed toilet. Finally I'd had it, I just had a new baby, had a c-section, my husband had gone back to work that day, the pain pills weren't working, so..... he went in to poop, yelled at me he was ready, and I told him to do it himself because I was feeding the baby (you could convientlely be doing something that takes a really long time). He yelled at me for maybe 10 minutes but eventually he did wipe himself. Of course he didn't do the best job but he did it. I have a box of baby wipes on the back of the toilet just for him in case the paper doesn't work. I just remind him not to flush them. My suggestion is become deaf for a few days and he'she will do it themselves, maybe not well but htey'll catch on.
