I found this article from newsweek that looks at test scores since No Child Left Behind has been implemented. It talks about the successes and some of the complaints about it. Do you think this is progress?? If not...do you have suggestions for how to improve the education system in America??? Report: Mixed Grades for No Child Left Behind - Newsweek Education - MSNBC.com

What troubles experts, though, is that gains in reading achievement are not being sustained as children age.
They are teaching to the tests. The kids are overwhelmed and my prediction is that you will see more drop outs for those that cannot keep up.

If I understood the article, it said that they emphasize math and reading both in the lower grades, but then only emphasize math in the higher grades once kids have learned to read. So your quote I think was referring to their recommendation that they needed to also keep emphasizing reading, so it would continue to show the gains that math did. I certainly don't think we should lower the standards....we're currently trailing many other nations already. So I think they're saying that the standards need to be higher if anything.
