I have my 3rd grader home today. He has been sick all weekend. He has a horrible cough, yesterday he had a fever. Do I have to still keep him home tomorrow if he is coughing? It does seem to have gotten better, and he has no fever today. I hate to keep him home too long!!!

At our school you need to be fever free for 24 hours before the child can return to school...so I would say he's probably okay to go tomorrow if he's fever free and seems ready to go, despite the cough, if it is improving. If it's not...maybe keep him home another day.

I go by the "24 hour rule" if the illness is gone for 24 hours, then they can go back to school in this household...I would say if he's coughing, he can go as long as it's not a really bad cough. If it's a dry cough and he's not coughing every minute or two he should be fine to go back...

If no fever, he's technically OK, but if he's still hacking and worn out, I'd let him rest a little more. Play it by ear and go by gut.

And be sure he coughs into tissues and discards them appropriately. Give him a tiny bottle of antibacterial for his desk.

Unless he gets sicker today, I think it will be fine to send him to school tomorrow.
