In DD1's classroom her teacher says "soap and water" and truely believes that is the only way to go...now I am starting to MAJORLY agree! Last Friday DH ate lunch with DD1 in school. Before lunch all of the kids go out side and play. The aide's that take them out to play have decided to use hand sanitizer after playing and before they eat...here's something to think about!

Just as the kids were sitting down to eat DH noticed one little girl (who used LOTS of sanitizer) who's hands were FILTHY looking...full of the dirt that she was digging in before lunch! Then, he started looking around and this little girl wasn't the only one with dirt all over her hands, in her fingernails...although hand sanitizers work in some situations, I DEFINATELY believe now that kids need to be using soap and water! Sanitizer may work to get rid of some germs, but what about all the ones trapped in the fingernails along with all of that dirt?

Just last Wed. a child in Bethany's class became very Ill after lunch some time. The parents brought him into the DR and they did find out it was because this child somehow "consumed" an amount of the sanitizer to make him sick. There are many parents in this school dist. who are fighting to get rid of it in our schools. A child only needs to consume the size of a dime to get severely ill- all it takes is them to rub it on their hands, fingers and put a finger into their mouth before it's had the chance to dry.

This is just something for everyone to be aware of. I am NOT saying that people need to stop using the sanitizer, just to be aware! It's hard for teachers and aide's at school to watch every child until their hand sanitizer has dried- it's almost impossible. If your children use it at school, teach them about how to use it properly- and teach them about cleaning out their fingernails, because it's a good place for germs to hide.

I think had sanitizer is only good in a pinch. I can not belive they are using this is school as hand washing eeewwww.. I would be letting my dd know that it is not good to have on her hands then touch food and eat it. I would be advising her to go to the bathroom to wash her hands after play time.

My dd's school encourages handwashing. However, they do keep hand sanitizer around for quick cleanups that don't necessarily require handwashing.

our school does not use hand sanitizer each room has a sink and soap and paper towels all provided by the school. now my friend they buy hand sanitizer in their school supply list. killing off the good bacteria is not good.. good ole fashioned handwashing has proven to be the most effective.

I'm a certified food safety advisor. Hand sanitizer only kills SOME bacteria, but there are tons of other 'germs' that can make someone ill, including several parasites that can be found in soil.

VIGOROUS hand washing with warm water and soap is the way to go.
