I signed up to bring the treat in for Thanksgiving in ds's class. It needs to be healthy (under 300 calories, less than 30g of fat, etc.). Any ideas on something healthy but fun? I want to give them more than an apple.

how about a teddybear snack mix? its teddy grahams, pretzel rods broken into 1inch pieces
rice check cereal and honey nut cherrios. mix together in a large bowl....then you mix butter(melted), brown sugar and cinnamon por over the mix toss and coat the cereal mix real good and spread in a pan and bake. it is really good and kids love it
let me know if you want the exact recipe....

How about a healthy, sweet and salty trail mix-type thing?

You can mix in pretzels, Cheerios, raisins, nuts (if no kids in the class have nut allergies) and anything else fun (like fall-colored M&M's) that you can come up with. Perhaps Ziploc will come out with some fall-themed plastic bags so each child can have their own bag (no putting dirty hands in a big bowl to serve themselves). I have no idea what the fat and caloric intake would be on this snack.

Celery with peanut butter or cream cheese might be yummy!

You could add to the idea above by making Bugs on a Log which is celery with peanut butter and raisins on top. You could also make banana muffins made with Splenda.

To go with the Thanksgiving theme, you could make pumpkin muffins or pumpkin cookies. If theme is not a consideration, try this (I've taken them to lots of kid gatherings, and they're always a hit):

Take long pretzel rods, slather peanut butter on the top half, and sprinkle them or roll them in cake sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, raisins, chopped dried fruit, mini m&m's, etc. The more colorful, the more appealing to kids.

I set them out on a wax paper-covered cookie sheet to "set" a little before putting them in a storage container, otherwise, they stick together.

A friend of mine thought up this idea and I thought it was cool: Hot pretzels. You can get them at the supermarket along with the frozen bread dough. You do need to heat them in a micro or oven, though. Ds's school has a full kitchen so we baked them (350 for 3-4 mins). You add the salt before baking. Makes a healthy snack. She served them in a basket topped with a dishcloth to keep them warm.

The only drawback were the ones I found at the grocery store - had high fructose corn syrup in them!! And they were the only brand there. I don't buy anything with HFCS in it or partially hydrogenated oils either so I left these at the store. Sad though because it's a great idea.

I wasnt going to take treats for Thanksgiving next week since I just did some at Halloween but as of today there is only one person signed up for treats, I thought I could swing it. I looked thru the grocery store flyers to see what is on sale. All my stores sales are good until 11/26, so that helps. I am going to get some celery (.69/lb) clean and cut it up and than I have about 10 (seriously) jars of peanut butter. And than for anyone that is allergic to peanut butter I have a brand new can of that cheese in a can stuff. I am going to have everything all ready so the kids can make there own-I do not want to bring home 17 pieces of celery wth or w/o stuff on them that little hands have touched. I am also going to try and make it to walmart for a big jug of juice. Last time I got a 3 qt jug of 100% juice for $2.
Other ideas:
apple slices and peanut butter, or fruit dip (I will post some easy ones)
Cheese and crackers
little sandwiches
Cut up oranges
summer sausage and cheese
roll up lunch meat
make up some trail mixes
jello jigglers-add in fruit cocktail and mini marshmallows
