Wake up all on their own??

Have thier own alarm clock and get up all by themself, get ready and head out the door to school, WITHOUT any help from a parent.

And if they are doing this own their own, and they are "sleeping in", at what point do you "get after them" to GET UP??

I guess it depends on the kid...my older son has been getting up on his own for years now (he's 12). He sets his alarm and gets up when he's supposed to get up (6AM). If I notice he's not up by 6:15, I will go in and wake him, I don't have a problem with that at all...we all have alarm malfunctions! It doesn't happen very often though, maybe once or twice a year.

My younger son doesn't want an alarm clock, he doesn't like that 'startled' feeling it gives him. I just go tell him when it's 7:15 that it's time to get up and he does. They don't 'sleep in'...it's just not their personality.

Every family is different obviously, I guess I don't have hard and fast rules about what has to happen in terms of them getting up for school...

NEVER!!! lol.....I swear that even though I started using an alarm clock in junior high or so, no matter what, my mom would pop her head in my room every single morning at some point (ok, a few times) to make sure I got up. Even into college..lol....even now, I have to pretend someone is "telling" me to get up when my alarm goes off for the 5th time. I'm terrible though, I know some kids can manage it, but I never could....I could sleep for days.

I agree with never! My 14 yr old sets her alarm, but is really good at ignoring it.

Ok, here is the story. My ds is USUALLY up around 5:45, he has to be out the door by 6:20 to catch the bus.

I am USUALLY up before him. Dh and I like to get up early and have coffee together before any of the kids are up, and we are morning people anyway.

Well, today I just did not want to get out of bed (up too late watching sports )

So, I got up around 6:30, and DH says to me, Bryan barely made it out the door. "What do you mean". Well, I had to go in and wake him up at 6:05. "Why did you wait so long?" I didn't realize that he wasn't up.

I am just shaking my head, because if I was up, I would NOT have waited so long to make sure that he was up.

OH, my DS is a Sophmore in HS, so he is definitely old enough to do all of this on his own. And like I said, usually he does.

So there you have it, the whole story....haha.

I was mad at DH, but what can you do?? Not much I suppose.....haha.

Umm.... 19, when they are out of your house? My son has a hard time getting to sleep, he would never make it if I didn't wake him up. I think my 11 might be able to do it, but I am in there making sure her 12 year old sister is up. She would sleep in until at least 10 if no one woke her up. The only one that gets up on her own is the one I want to sleep in. The 3 year old.

Hokey Dina that's early! I think I'd need help getting up if I needed to be out the door that early.

We leave the house at 8:00. They get up with their alarms but still need a lot of 'direction'. Make sure to brush your teeth, 'breakfast is ready', etc. I am trying to get them to do more and more every year but 6:20! Wow. That must be hard to be out the door that early.

My mom always woke my sister and I up when we went to school. Once we got into middle and high school, we had our own alarm clocks and would get up when we wanted to to get ourselves prettied for the day. haha If we weren't up by a certain time, she would wake us up.

My kids do not get up on their own. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get them awake enough in the morning so that I can go get my shower and start getting ready.
