The kids are off this week from school for fall break. I try to schedule any doctor's appointments for my dd during this week so we don't have to worry about her missing any school.

Yesterday I took dd to the dentist. My dd has severe crowding in her mouth and needed to have two baby teeth removed to make room for some adult teeth. We don't normally go to this dentist -- our regular dentist recommended that we go here because she felt that our dd needed some sort of sedation and she doesn't do that in her office.

I thought this was just going to be a consultation where the dentist was going to tell us what he was going to do and offer options for sedation for my dd. Wrong! He said he would go ahead and remove the teeth right then and there! I wasn't prepared for this and neither was my dd. I'd been telling her all along that it was just a consultation; there was nothing to worry about. I always like to be up front with my dd about what's going to happen at a doctor's or dentist's appointment. I feel bad for not being fully aware of what was going to happen at this appointment and for not being able to prepare my dd for it.

They gave her laughing gas and my dd did surprisingly well. Because of my mommy guilt, I let dd veg out in front of TV most of the day and eat whatever soft foods she wanted.

She probably needed this. She'll know in her heart of hearts that you didn't con her and that you were just as surprised about it as she was. She'll probably remember your compassion and care over the whole thing rather than any memory of pain. I think you deserve the good mommy award for how well you handled this one.

You aren't a bad mommy....You just had a bad dentist. I hope your daughter feels better today. I wouldn't be returning to that dentist again. They should of gave you what you asked for and not spring it on you. That was rude.

You didn't mislead your daughter on purpose....she will understand this. No problem.

I would be thankful for him doing it right then instead of you having to pay for the consultation and another office visit fee. Very thoughtful of him to go ahead and do it since he could instead of just trying to rake in the bucks. He saved you some money....or your insurance some money, but either way, he wasn't trying to gauge anyone. Sounds like a good one.

I agree, I think it was GOOD of him to get things done and taken care of right away,, and I'm sure your daughter heard the surprise of it happening now and understood you didn't do it on purpose,,,

I agree, saved you time and money on coming back again. I had to have so many teeth removed when I was younger b/c of crowding. I'm sure she knows you didn't plan it, I wouldn't worry about it and I surely wouldn't call you a bad mother.

You did everything in your power to make the experience better. That is a great mom!! Besides I do believe the Bad Mom of the Year Award was still on the mantle when I left this morning. My dd put her shirt on backwards yesterday morning, wore it all day at school and I didn't notice until bath time last night. AND IT WAS A V-NECK!
