We went to meet my DD#2's new teacher and see her classroom. The teacher had various papers out for us to take. One had this little story on it. Dag-nab-it if she didn't make me cry, and it's not even the first day...
Tomorrow is the great day, little friend. In the morning you go to school for the very first time. A whole new world opens up to you then.
How ready are you to meet it? You’ve handled the bought-especially-to-start-school clothes so many times in eager anticipation of the day you would first wear them to kindergarten. And you’ve almost mastered tying your own shoes except for the hard part – the bow.
But I wonder how ready I am for this new life of yours? If I could, I’d hold you back just a little longer, close to me, where I can control the influences on you, share all your life. For I know what lies before you.
Tomorrow when you take my hand for the walk to school, I will be the one who dawdles. “Just a few minutes longer” I’ll tell myself. “Only a few extra minutes to keep you all mine.”
When we reach that big, big door, you’ll leave me, anxious to join the other boys and girls in the kindergarten room. And you’ll walk through it, as your brothers and sisters all have done, without a backward glance.
It’s so hard for me to let you go my friend. For five years, you have been my constant companion. Together we have surveyed the supermarket and puttered our way through the plant shop. It won’t be the same without you, without your warm, trusting hand placed lightly in mine.
In the morning I will help you put on the new school clothes, and then tuck a clean new handkerchief into your pocket. And we will be on our way.
But tonight – tonight, for the last time, you are simply my baby. And I will hold you now, at bedtime, just a little longer, cuddle you just a bit closer, give you one more kiss before saying goodnight. In your excitement, you don’t notice Mommy stealing another kiss.
I will need it for kindergarten.
