I consider spanking to be any type of hitting or swatting the child.

I spank mine. Sometimes it is the only thing that will get their attention. Time outs are a joke with my kids, they wouldn't care if they had to sit still for 2 minutes, 10 minutes, or whatever. My sister-in-law does time-outs with her 4 yr old, and he even laughs at the "time-out" concept, it does absolutely NOTHING to modify his behavior. I'm not saying that it doesn't work for everyone because it obviously does work for some, just saying that it doesn't work for my family and spanking does.

We do not spank. I was spanked as a child and hit with a leather belt, etc. DH had 3 different step fathers, and was beaten, choked, abused by the 2nd step father. Taking away a favorite game, toy, tv or computer time seems to work fine.

My sister spanks her kids and it seems to make them more defiant and angry!!!

Our kids are pretty much grown now & we rarely spanked when they were under age 3, and never after age 3. We only did so when we really needed to get their attention because their behavior was dangerous to their well-being. If it's unexpected, it's effective. The two times I can recall spanking is when my toddler tried to run into the street, and when one child thought it was funny to try to run away from me in a shopping mall.

We had a lot of good luck using non-reinforcement of any kind to behaviors we didn't like. Whining comes to mind first, nothing got a lack of attention from us faster than whining and saying "i want". Later in years, removal of the power cord to gaming systems without warning was very effective. Not a word even need be said!
