For those of you who have had your kids do summer school did you do it because the teacher recommended it, or because you just wanted your child to get additional help on a certain concept? Did you have to pay for it or was it free?

I would love to send my kids to summer school, because they love school! But it has always been (for us anyway) that you could not go without a teacher recommendation, and you had to need extra help to have a teacher recommendation. So, no summer school for my bunch!

Around here, your child has to go to summer school if they have not met a certain standard in their grade or classes. There is no charge for it. It's really not a 'fun' thing per se, more a 'getting you up to speed' thing.

If your child met the standard, but you as a parent felt they needed additional help, you are encouraged to seek private tutoring.

My son has to go, he is ahead of the class in math, but his reading and writing is lacking. which seems pretty normal with boys. But it is free, we dont pay and it was teacher recommended. Now is there still a stigma with summer school, because I was very upset when I heard he had to go and had the usual working-mom-not -spending-enough-time-with-kids-guilt.

I don't believe there is the same stigma with summer school that there was when we were kids. I think it's just looked upon as a way to try and work on a subject matter that a child is strugggling with.
