My daughter used her own money she earned to buy a phone this week. She really wanted to have text messaging because all he friends have it.
I hope she uses it responsibly.

We have unlimited text messaging on our phone plan. It was really worth it because texts add up fast! Not only do they charge for the texts sent but the one's you receive from other people also! We pay 9.99 a month for the unlimited texting.

We have pay as you go phones for the kids, and they are responsible for adding minutes. If they want to spend their money texting, they get to pay for it. Neither of our teens really cares for it anyway, probably because it costs them! LOL

The boys are not old enough for cell phones. I would let her have the text but let her know the rules and what happens if she goes over the limit.

My kids don't have (or want) cell phones...

If they did...I'd probably allow it and see what happened...it's her phone and she's paying for it...right? I know for our phones, unlimited texting is rather inexpensive $5 or $6 per month.

Our DD has had a cell phone for about 4 years now and when she first got it she went through her minutes with texting needless to say when she had to make a call there was no minutes and she learned her lesson and has not done it since.

My son has it because we are on a family plan and dh wanted it. I have to say that it does come in handy. That being said, I think it really depends on the kid and how trustworthy they are.

Personally I think text messaging is really dumb and see no purpose in it what so ever. My 14 yr old though, can't live without it. She has unlimited that she pays for from her babysitting money.
