DH was homeschooled, and like AuSet, I see so much confidence and knowledge in him that I never took from school -- and I was a straight-A nose-in-the-books student! I loved school, but I always regretted not taking anything with me because it was all taught to remember til the test and then you just wiped your mind clean so you could absorb all the other junk they taught you for the next year. I'm excited to be learning WITH my children as they learn new things!
I think one of the most beneficial things that will come from homeschooling my kids is the ability to teach things in a hands-on manner (and be able to partake in it with them!). Also, I like that I will have control over disciplinary actions if they need taken; I've seen so much negative disciplinary action (or total lack of it due to popularity) from the public schooling I had, and I absolutely hated it. I want to have options open for my kids to learn in a different way, or by way of a different path than the traditional way. Choosing what they want to do for their arts (art class, poetry class, music lessons, photography, etc) instead of being subjected to the normal standard of art, and then having to try to shove something else that really interests them into the day through an elective. I got screwed over in high school from required class timing and was unable to go to a vocational schooling that was in my desired career field; I want flexibility and variety for my kids that I didn't have in school. I want my family to be very close and tight-knit and from the homeschooling families I have known, they are a lot closer than those who aren't home-schooled. (No offense meant for others who have tight-knit families without homeschooling; this is just my personal view and belief.)
