Strife over shots: Should our kids play together? - Kids and parenting - MSNBC.com

Interesting article. Truthfully, I have never thought about what I would do if I discovered a child at play group had not had its vaccines.

what I don't understand about the fuss about the little boy who travelled to switzerland and contracted measles, and he infected 11 people who's parents chose not to vaccinate.... that is the risk, he did not infect anyone who was vacinated.

I think the parents of the nonimmunized children should be more concerned about their kids playing with others who have been.

If your child is not immunocompromised, has been vaccinated, and does not have a sibling that has not yet been vaccinated than I see no problem with them playing together.

Although not everything is foolproof. About 4 years ago we had an outbreak of measles here in Iowa. Dh has had all his shots, and a repeat measles shot later in life and still caught it.

I agree with the others. My kids are vaccinated. An unvaccinated child is not automatically contagious. I'm sure I would be singing a different tune if my vaccinated children still got sick from another child who wasn't vaccinated.

I think the fuss might have come about because some of the children that contracted it were too young to receive the vaccine. That said, I would never bother/think to ask, I find that is going too far...even for me!

What are you going to do, go to mother's day out, and ask for "shot card" from each child, before you let your child stay!

I would just make sure that my child was up to date on any and all shots, and let the other parents worry about their child.

After all in most cases, the child that didn't have the shot, is the one that has to worry about getting the disease

I personally think vaccines ARE dangerous. Driving a car is dangerous, cancer is caused by who knows what, and man made hormones/chemicals are added to our food. I still eat the same and I still drive. I was vaccinated and my daughter has been as well. I don't worry about children who aren't. In fact I completely support the parents who make that decision. It's a hard choice. I don't know why this should be a big problem- only if the vaccinated children became sick. I agree with ChickyHip- if my child were infected you can bet your butt I'd feel a bit differently. But think about this- if a vaccinated child could get sick from it then how would a vaccination have stopped the initial outbreak to begin with? I certainly don't have the answer.
