Ds is only 4 and wanted to go as a skeleton. I modified his costume to make it 2-pc, and the original costume came with a scary skull mask. I didn't even show it to ds, I knew he'd either #1 want to wear it and I thought it much too scary, or #2, he'd be so scared of it that he wouldn't want to go as a skeleton at all after I had made him his coustume. He worried no one would know who he was without the mask, I told him they definitely know he was a skeleton!

In this house there will be so Satan costumes, no guns/knives/swords (ok Maybe a sword - depends on what the costume was) anything violent or overly scary.

When my oldest was young, I always dressed him as something scarey, you know, Frankenstein, a mummy, a spider, etc. I personally like those type costumes best. Not the blood and gore type, but the traditional scarey ones. He did this until he was about 8 then he began changing. He and my younger one usually pair up, being soldiers, the crocodile hunter and the croc, a knight and a dragon, etc. This year they are going out separately as the blue power ranger and a janitor. I am fairly lenient here. I would not go for blood and gore type, but other than that almost anything goes. I don't have a girl, but I have to say that like Claire, I would not let them dress "trashy" if I did. I have seen to many young girls looking like hookers and it bothers me.

We always do Trunk or Treat at our church for Halloween. Friendly costumes are a must. We normally pick a theme for our truck and all dress to fit the theme. Once the kids trunk or treat they then come back and help us hand out candy. This year we are decorating Dh SUV as a covered wagon and we are dressing the part of cowboys and Indians.
