What do you think of holiday newsletters? Yay, or nay? Do you get some from people who want to make their family seem perfect in every way? What advice would you have for writing a good letter that doesn't sound like you're bragging? Or, avoid one that's all doom and gloom?

I personally love them! We don't get enough of them, imho. I love the ones that are like mine - newsy, breezy and not braggy. I always try to include some humor - like the time my twins who are now 9 got hold of a sharpie marker when they were toddlers and colored all over the computer monitor.

I've never received one but I think they'd be neat. Better than Christmas cards.

we send one every year...I let DH write it, he enters a lot of humor and just is honest with how things are going. Everyone says they love getting it because they don't get to see us very often and with the craziness of life, it is a great way to catch up.

I like to send them and receive them from friends and relatives who live far away. It's hard to communicate on a regular basis sometimes.

Yes, I have one friends whose letter is over-the-top. I know it's not a competition so I just read her letter and then move on.

I love holiday letters! I love hearing about the people I love and care about...how the kids are doing, what they're all up to. We don't receive any letters that are 'doom and gloom'...and I'm sure I woudln't send one that had all that in it. What would be the point? I'm a positive person by nature, so I just wouldn't write something like that. We don't receive any letters that sound 'braggy' either. *shrug*

I don't write a holiday letter every year, sometimes I write one for all our extended family, but sometimes I just handwrite in all their cards. Just depends on my mood and time frame. How does one make the letter sound 'non braggy'? No idea. I like hearing what people are up to - so to me - if someone went on a great trip and told me about it, I'd be happy for them and like to hear the details. If someone's husband got promoted, that's WONDERFUL! And I'd be happy for them! Of course, some folks might find that 'braggy' (definately around here! LOL!). I guess I just don't think of things that way. But that's me.

I think the point of a Christmas letter is to share all the good things that have happened to your family throughout the year. Unless someone sent me a letter that read "Hey, our life is perfect and yours isn't, Merry Christmas"! I wouldn't take it as them bragging.

I receive several letters at Christmas and I love reading about what is going on in everyones life.

I like getting them more than just a card. Our lives are so busy that it is hard to keep up with old college friends and friends in other towns. I love catching up this way!

To be honest, I would LOVE it if I could just receive this instead of going to the Christmas Reunion and spending 4-6 hours hearing about everyone's health problems!! I am 28 and the youngest grandchild; the oldest is 62. I haven't been in a few years because of this. The aunts and uncles are all 63 and older and I swear health problems is all they talk about.
Then EACH one asks me what is it again that I do for a living. And how old am I? And how old is my stepson now? And he is just growing like a weed..oh my goodness. When am I going to have a baby? etc, etc, etc, etc.

So, anyway, newsletter is great. Even if it was full of doom and gloom, I can read it for a few moments then discard. All without leaving my house and spending my whole night listen to them.

Just so you know, for the protection of my family, I am not going this year.

I sent one once!! My sister, who lives 3 hours away from me, has a daughter that is 6 weeks older than my oldest complained that I was bragging about her. That cured me of ever sending one again.
