I am definitely doing this. I am using this program that I found in one of the articles on this board:
http://www.mishell.ca/

It is so easy to use and took me very little time to set up. It shows you how much money you have on any given day with your bills paid. It is great to look at the long term potential savings if you keep spending down!

We used Quicken a few years ago and really didn't like it, so I am so glad I found this. Every day I just plug in any new expenses or income and my monthly bills are automatically in there.

Before you spend $14.95, did you check out mint.com? It's free.

I have been doing this on and off for some time (when I worked in high school and still never had any money, my Dad told me to write it down in a little book and I would be surprised where I was spending it). So, when I start to feel my impulse spending get out of control, I start tracking it and it stops (I just don't want to have to write it down!!). For 2008, I have started an Excel spreadsheet that I enter everything into. I have all of the expenses broken down into categories and then a summary sheet that I will be able to use to see changes in spending throughout the year.
