Step #36: Organize

A place for everything and everything in its place. That’s the goal that most families are striving for. Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done. Taking a look at how your household functions can help you come up with creative solutions for keeping your belongings in check.

Analyze the Space
Keep your goals for how the space should function in mind as you attempt to keep it organized. For example, if your goal for the bedroom is to have it serve as a sanctuary for you and your spouse, it’s not a good idea to keep your home computer there. This means you may have to move some things around and store them elsewhere. Revisit what you had written down for the ideal vision of each room in your house.

Focus on Trouble Spots
Pay special attention to trouble spots like kitchen counters, utility drawers, and basements that are used as common “dumping grounds.” Keep the things you use most frequently in easily accessible spots, and store the rest.

Successful Storage
Store similar items together whenever possible, in a place close to where they’re used. Purchase storage solutions that make organization simple and easy. Clear containers that allow you to see what’s inside work well. For things that need to be stored out in the open, pick something attractive such as a decorative basket. Anticipate future storage needs and leave some empty space.

Label boxes, folders and containers accordingly, so there is no questions what belongs where. This makes it easy for everyone in your family to quickly put things away. For kids, use photos instead of words when labeling storage units.

Super ~ I have done a lot of this already when I was "decluttering" - All I have to do is the 'junk drawer' & my night stand by the bed.

I start decluttering today. It took me awahile to get motivated but I am now and today is the day.

My hubby brought home some boxes from work for me to put the yard sale stuff in so I have no excuses now.

I even went and made a list of what I want to declutter and in what order I want to do it in... I am going to organize as I go.

Thanks for the tips on organizing Kim!

I was really bad with this when we first got married. I lost my keys everyday. Seriously every day. And my purse? About every other day. They were in the house somewhere but where? I got so frustrated trying to find them and wasted so much time.

Then one day I saw dh installing a little hook in the front hall closet and clearing some space on the top shelf of the front hall closet. I ask, "What are you doing?" He said, "You'll see." When he was finished he said, "Everything needs a home. Your keys and your purse have been homeless and now they have a home. Every time you walk in the door, put your keys on the hook, your purse right here on the shelf and when you are ready to leave the house, you'll know exactly where they are."

It worked! I never lost them again. I had never thought of it that way. Now everything needs a home. I am bad at finding homes for things but good at keeping things in their home so we have a deal. When something new comes into the house, I say to dh, "It needs a home." He'll find the home for it and then I make sure it gets there. It works great!

Ive been working on this for a while. I bought some really inexpensive storage baskets from target for $39 on target.com. It was a set of 7. I used a few in my closet and the rest in the playroom.
I read somewhere to take pictures of what belongs in the box and laminate them, attaching it to the basket for little ones who cant read. I havent gotten to this yet but Im thinking it will help my 2.5 yr old figure out where things go!

Kind of funny this was posted while I was busy going through the pile of papers and filing, tossing and shreding them. Has so much more to do but it so nice when you can find stuff.
