Really, each person has to define "spending freeze" for themselves. I will let you know I have a few things on my "approved spending" list that some of you would not consider a necessity. One is a birthday gift for my dad, who is turning 65 on Jan. 13th. the other is contact lenses (yes, I suppose I could just wear my glasses).
The main thing here is to cut out impulse purchases, use up what you have, stay out of the stores as much as possible. How you define the rest will be up to you. However, I do think the stricter you can be with yourself the more you'll get out of this project. Like most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it.

Yes thanks for the Clarification, It would be hard for me to cut all the little spending that is planned. I know I can cut back to less excpenicive choices and still be satisfied. For example ordering a Tea instead of a non-fat Grande Irish Cream Latte and a bagle with cream cheese when I go for my weekly coffee with the girls. I am still getting what I am after which is a chance to socialize.
I to had a birthday in this time period but we don't have to go out to a spend restraunt I could save a lot and still celebrate by cooking him a steak dinner at home for a quarter of the price.
I organize a local moms group so am hosting events meaning that I need to find alternatives to just not attending them

I don't think your rationalizing this. If, like you say, it's only once a year that you do this then I would think it's fine. Howevery, think and plan in advance. Know where you guys are going so you know how expensive (or cheap ) it's going to be. Save for this specific event prior to it comeing and i think all should go well. Thats my opinion.
