Pick Your Top Ten List
Now that you’ve created a dream list and organized them according to importance – it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty and pick the ten that are truly the most important to you. If carefully thought out and well chosen, your top ten will help guide you to make wise decisions with your time and money.
Focus on the dreams that you marked as highest in importance, regardless of how far off in the future they may be. If you have important long-term goals on your dream list such as funding your retirement, paying for kids’ college, or taking a trip to Europe on your 20th anniversary, you need to start planning for them now in order for them to materialize. Often important things get put on the back burner because they’re not urgent. Don’t let that happen to you!
In order to create a well-balanced list, pick at least one dream from each of your categories. My personal dreams are labeled: career, family, health, home, leisure and personal. No matter what each of your categories is; pick the most important dream in each one of them. To help narrow them down, ask yourself this question, “If I only got to do one of the things on my list, which one would it be?”
Then, pick enough from other areas to round out the top ten. Pay special attention to similarities and recurring themes of the other things on your list (for example, if you have ten travel-related dreams but they’re listed as only medium-range importance, you may want to include at least one of them in your summertime top ten).
Assignment: Come up with a list of your top ten dreams. In the next step, we’ll focus on turning them into goals and creating actionable steps for them this summer.
