Hi. Can buttermilk be frozen and thawed for use later? We only use it for a few things- ranch dressing and pancakes. Our grocery stores only carry a larger container than we need and it goes bad on us before we need it again.

I can't answer your question, but instead of buying buttermilk, you can make buttermilk substitute by putting 1 T of white vinegar with 1 cup of milk, and it's buttermilk! I never buy buttermilk, I always substitue with this. Hope this helps.

I freeze buttermilk for pancakes. I put measure it out (according to the recipe) and put it in quart ziplock freezer bags. I defrost in in the fridge overnight or in a sink full of cold water the morning I make the pancakes. Keeps for up to 3 months. It separates a bit so I'm not sure about the dressing. I would think it would work if you had something else liquid or gloppy (like mayo) to mix it with. Not sure what's in your recipe. HTH

I bought the powdered buttermilk in the baking section. It is awesome!!! you just mix it with water and you have buttermilk!

I try to use real buttermilk in recipes but I've had good sucess with the substitution (lemon or vinegar in milk) and the powdered buttermilk as well.

Not sure why, but I have not had great success with freezing fresh buttermilk for later use. The texture changes a bit...it just depends on how important that is to you, what you're using it for etc.
