My very 1st response would be a sigh of resignation... because it will probably be my friend who is going through some tough times and really needs to talk, so I'll take a deep breath and chat. I would hope she would do the same for me. Actually, I know she would. That is what friendship is for.

put my invesigative hat on and chat. If she is desparate out of boredom, I will politely let her go. If she is desparate out of crisis I will stay, listen and do whatever I can to help.

I think my first initial response would be "what now?", but by that I mean "can anything else go on this day that needs my attention?". Nothing against the friend calling just that 'why oh why me?". Then once I get a sense for what my friend needs, I would politely tell her I will call her back once I put my kids down for the night so I could give her my undivided attention. Nothing is worse than trying to help a friend in need and having two kids screaming in the background "mooooommmmmm"

Wow, I really feel heartless now!!!!

I'm too practical I guess. If someone needs my undivided attention, I cannot be dealing with my boys at the same time. It NEVER fails that when the house is quiet and the phone rings they spring up in action. I have YET to be able to carry on a phone conversation without interuption and if a friend of mine is in need, it would not only be frustrating to me but I would think frustrating to her to hear my kids in the background. At least, I would think it would be if I was the caller

You guys have better control over your kids than I do!!!

I would talk to her while I kept doing what needed to be done.
