You know the big hype about plastic cutting boards being healthier than wood ones? It has been proven that more bacteria can harbour in the plastic ones than the wooden ones. Yeah for natural materials!! I got this info. from the "Organic Housekeeping" book. It is an awesome book!

That would make sense. You know how plastic food containers can leach chemicals into food when their are cuts or scrapes in them? It's probably the same with plastic cutting boards, too. Natural is better! I'll have to look for that book, it sounds interesting.

I put my wood ones in the dishwasher.... their not holding up too well lol!

What is the final verdit then? Wood or plastic in dishwasher?

Wood should not go in the dishwasher.

They harbor in the 'nicks' you make with your knife. I know my wooden boards have nicks as well, but they are not supposed to grow the bacteria like the plastic ones do. I need to actually BUY that book so I can paraphrase it better.

I remember reading something about it...gosh, a long time ago! That bacteria on a wooden board died off within a few minutes on the surface but bacteria often on plastic multiplied...even though the general thought was that it was the opposite.

I still use plastic though! LOL! I have seperate ones for meats and then veggies...I wash them in the dishwasher immediately after use. If you read all the studies and articles, it probably doesn't really matter as long as you don't use a really scarred board and wash it well and disinfect it.
