An interesting article. It says here they think most people would stop eating beef if they knew just how bad it was on the environment - I question that. I rarely meat red meat but I know I'm in the minority on that. Still an interesting article - and with meat prices rising it just might happen!

Cow farts "may" be causing global warming, but you still have folks who don't believe in global warming, so why would they care about methane? I highly doubt pushing the damage of cow farts is going to get anyone to stop eating beef. It does make me giggle though! If eating less domestic meat were possible, I think one of the bigger impacts would be hopefully less CAFO's.

Any large scale CAFO - beef, pork or chicken - is very harsh on the environment and on the animals. They aren't very nice places. I think if folks followed the life of a CAFO beef steer, that might think again about meat.

About 10% of our meat here is probably from CAFO animals. The rest is wild game or local animals, that I know are free range and raised in an environmentally friendly and ethical manner. There are some very large dairy farms around - 5000 to 10,000 dairy cows - and they aren't very nice.

I've heard this many times too. It's not just the methane emissions, beef costs more energy to process than poultry. We don't eat much red meat because it's just plain expensive and not very heart-healthy!

Well, I have never been much of a meat eater since I was a kid, but after I heard more about the effect of these huge farms raising animals for food, not just some of the ethical issues for the animals but also for the environment as a whole, like the space needed to graze them, etc., I got a lot stricter on it as far as my kids. I used to occasionally buy ground turkey for tacos or chicken nuggets, but now I am buying no meat whatsoever. I also am stricter about my kids ordering when we eat out. Not only for their health, but for the environment as a whole. I do believe in global warming, BTW.

I stopped eating meat in March of this year for many reasons. Caring for the environment was a big one, but if you really want to know what happens to the animals, watch "meet your meat." After that, I just could never touch it again.

BTW: They don't fart, they burp...lol

I don't really have a problem with people eating meat - though I'm not a big meat eater and was a vegetarian for many years but I do feel that people should take decent care of the animal that they plan on consuming, a fair trade off you can say. I think when you know where your food comes from and actual see it in the living state before it turns it arrives on your plate that you have a lot more respect for your food. And these mass meat production lots simply do not do that. I pay a little more and I drive a bit further to make sure that our meat comes from a local place where I can see their cows are out on pasture and have pretty decent lives before joining the food chain.

I remember learning about this in college in the late 80s so it has been around awhile. We don't eat much red meat because I am doing WW and it is not worth the points to me. I have never been a red meat fan. Shoot, we don't eat a lot of chicken either! Living near the Gulf has its advantages for seafood lovers!

I thought I would bump this up in light of the recent slaughter house that was closed in California.

We are also eating very little meat at the moment. One of the reasons is, without my husband here I have to touch the raw meat and I really hate to do that.

I also feel really bad about the way they keep those animals (we can only afford normal supermarket meat at the moment!) and I think it's just healthier for you not to have meat every day. We eat a lot of legumes and the kids are fine with that!

I don't think the article is going to make people eat less red meat, most of them just don't care or don't believe it.
