Right now I buy eggs from a friend of the family but I'd like to get my own laying hens in the spring. Anyone else have chickens on this site?

We don't but only because we live in a rental house and we really don't want to put much more work into this place as we will be moving on soonish.

However, I would suggest you spend some time over at backyard chicken. They have some great forum boards as well.

We get our eggs from a friend. I hadn't realized how much I loved them until I had to buy some from the store and they just looked...fake...lol. Yeah, they were real eggs, but they don't look as good as fresh eggs.

We buy organic, free range eggs and ever since we started, DH will not buy anything else. He doesn't care that they cost $2.00 more a dozen. I just wish I could find someone close to our house that sold them!

ZooNana, lucky you! I wish I had chickens!! How many do you have and do you get enough eggs a week from them or even too many eggs?

Too bad you aren't closer, you could get eggs from us.

We have about 3 doz chickens. Most times we have too many eggs, (usually about 1 and a half dozen a day) this week we've had almost none. We do sell them when we have extras. There are times I can't find customers and we're stuck with a fridge full of eggs. This week we have customers calling and the chickens aren't laying (I think they're molting).

During the winter they don't lay much if at all. I actually had to buy eggs a few times last winter

We got our chickens last spring and they just started laying this week! It's so awesome.

We have 29 (28 hens, and one rooster), and the eggs are still pretty sparse. We are getting an average of about 2 a day. Once we get enough we are will sell them, as well as sell chicks in the spring. We have a couple different penned areas where they are able to feed so currently more than 1/2 their feed coming from our backyard. Once one becomes icky ~ we move them to the other until the grass and vegetation grows back. In addition, they get the leftovers from the garden, extra weeds from the yard and all the grass clippings. This winter will be harder since they won't be out as much, and confined to the coop more .

Zoonana ~ I am curious about them laying in the winter. Do you leave lights on in the coop all day? From the farmers around here, I have heard in the winter you need to light the coop for at lease 15 hours to keep their egg production up. Also, I agree with the moulting thing....we have feathers EVERYWHERE ~ It's been a never ending job cleaning them out everyday! Bleh ~

I don't have electricity out at the coop, so I can't leave lights on. I would if I could, because even a few extra hours of light could keep their egg production up.
