Hello All!

I am a stay-at-home-mom to a sweet 5 month old little boy and an MBA student at the University of Missouri St. Louis. This semester I am taking Consumer Behavior and we have a group project that involves a survey and focus group.

We have decided to research either gDiapers or cloth diapers and need some volunteers to take the survey. The assignment requires that we get 60 participants that use the product (gDiapers or cloth diapers) and 60 that use disposable diapers. The survey will be online and anonymous and take 10-15 minutes to complete. If you would love to help another mom keep her sanity by volunteering a few moments of your time, please send the following information to me at Allen.Jennifer.L@gmail.com:

1) Email address where you want survey link sent.
2) Whether you use disposables, gDiapers or cloth diapers. If you use cloth diapers, please note which type/brand.

Also, if you are in the St. Louis area, we will need a focus group of 12 moms that use either gDiapers or cloth diapers. This group will only meet one time for about 2 hours one Saturday in March or April on UMSL’s campus. It will be a videotaped session that will only be used for class purposes and we are hoping to come up with some type of compensation for your time. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of this focus group!

Thanks in advance for your input and time!

How did the research go? I am 28 weeks pregnant and trying to decide what to do for diapering. I live in NYC and don't have laundry in my apartment, so I am leaning towards gDiapers. I'm curious if you were able to get any research done on them?

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,
S

I just wanted to let you know that she emailed me and told me that they didn't have enough participants for the study. Maybe things have changed since then, but I wanted to let you know in case you don't hear anything back

Thank you for letting me know. Do you have any opinion on the gDiaper?

I really don't have any information on the gDiapers. I THINK they are a washable cover with a flushable liner, but I'm really not sure.

I can tell you what we do:

We use pocket diapers the most. They have a pocket for washable inserts. When a diaper is changed, I pull the insert out of the diaper, and the diaper and insert and any dirty wipes all go in the diaper pail until wash day. There are no soaking diapers and it isn't stinky (unless you get right down by the pail then it is a little bit smelly, but it doesn't stink up the room, and it might not smell at all if used a lid). If the diaper is poopy, then I spray it first (I have a diaper sprayer attached to the toilet for this purpose), then it goes into the pail wet and gets washed with the rest of the diapers when I wash every 2 days.

We also have AIOs (All In Ones). These are the most like disposable diapers in design. They are a one piece diaper, so there are no inserts to mess with. We have these mostly for my DH (when he is home with DD) and my parents. The AIOs are convenient but they also take longer to dry in the dryer and they aren't as absorbent as the pockets, lasting only about 2 hours before needing changed. We change about every 2-3 hours anyway, so this isn't a problem for us.

Nighttime diapers are just a pocket diaper stuffed with a 'nighttime' insert...They are just thicker than the daytime ones. We have only had a couple leaks, and then it was only 'damp', not a soak-through.

When we are out for the day I just wet some of our washable wipes and put them in the disposable wipe travel container. They stay wet all day that way. Then I just pack a few diapers. When I change a diaper, I just fold it (poop and all) and put it into a cloth wet bag that zips shut and put the wet bag into the diaper bag (there is NO SMELL at all once it's zipped). The wet bag holds 5-6 diapers (and wipes), so it lasts all day and I have a second one if needed. When I get home I just unload the bag and spray any poops into the toilet and put everything into the diaper pail for wash day. Changes don't take any longer with cloth than with disposable when you are out...you just put the things into a bag instead of the garbage. You do have to take care of it when you get home though.

As for cost. We have been in cloth for about 13 months now, and we just hit $400 with the cost of various diapers, inserts, wipes, 2 wet bags, 2 pail liners, and a diaper sprayer. DD has been in the same diapers since we started using cloth when she was 4 months old. We are going on over a year now and it looks like she'll be in the same size until potty training. I EASILY could have just spent $300, but I wanted to try different brands of diapers and inserts and I bought her a matching diaper/T-shirt combo for Christmas. LOL.

Prefolds and covers are cheaper I think, but I haven't looked into them much as we love our pockets.

gDiapers are nice because I'm pretty sure they have the flushable liners so you can use diaper rash ointments with them. I keep disposables on hand in case DD gets a rash as I can't use my lanolin ointment with the cloth diapers. Luckily, she doesn't get a rash very often and I haven't bought disposables since last summer some time. My mom does keep disposables at her house for when DD spends the night there, but I always put her in cloth when I pick her up...cloth just seems SO much softer when you have them side-by-side to compare.

Ok, sorry that got so long! LOL. A lot of information for not even being asked. Sorry.

Wow, thank you! I really didn't know there was that much to cloth diapers! I use cloth diapers, and I don't really know enough about the different types to tell you all about it, but I think they're called "prefolded"? They're all one rectangular piece, and the strip down the middle is thicker. I use them while I'm at home w/dd (which is basically all day every day!) and we use disposables when we go out. For soem reason, dh doesn't like the cloth diapers--I think it's just the simple act of walking them to the bathroom instead of folding them up and throwing them at me, like he does the disposables!--so many times he'll use the disposables while we're at home, too. As a very frugal individual, you can imagine how this irks me! And we use disposables at night, too.
