Default Harmful Ingredients in Ranch Dressing

Hi Ladies:

You know how we all love to eat Ranch dressing with our veggies? And how we all give that to our kids to eat to encourage them to eat their veggies? Well, have you ever read the ingredients in your ranch dressing.

There is MSG (monosodium glutamate) as well as hydrogenated oils/fats (i.e. transfats) in it. I went to Albertson's the other night to buy some dressing and read the ingredients for a handful of brands that make ranch dressing. All of them EXCEPT the organic one that I bought had BOTH of these ingredients in them.

So READ your label ladies on everything that you buy. Even if it says "No Trans Fats" on the front. Any "hydrogenated" oils or fats are really transfats which are totally harmful to your body. And of course we all know already how harmful MSG is to our bodies. So let's not pollute our kids bodies with all this "junk".

Thanks for the heads up.

My DD4 will eat just about anything if it is dipped in ranch dressing. Next time I'll look into buying organic.

That is heartbreaking! I love ranch dressing. I'll have to look more. Thanks, I think.

When I was a kid we only did oil and vinegar for dressing. When I found out about ranch dressing, I went wild. Now to save $ I have gone back to oil and vinegar. Boy am I glad!

Thanks for the info!

You know I was the exact same way! Loved vinegar and oil and then I met ranch! Maybe I should return to my old ways.

It's pretty easy to make your own ranch dressing. One recipe:

1 cup buttermilk (I get the dry powder and mix it as I need it)
1 cup mayo (sometimes I use yogurt)
A couple of shakes of garlic powder and onion powder
A teaspoon of parsley
A teaspoon of chives.

Wisk together and refrigerate

I was just thinking about this lately, it is my favorite. Well, I like Italian too, but I dip every thing from chicken to pizza in ranch dressing. My youngest 2 don't like it. I can't recall if the middle child likes it, but my teen would miss it. Although, he is happy as long as he has hotsauce. So, I think I will forgo buying it anymore, and give homemade stuff a try. The way we go through it when we have it, I doubt I could afford the organic. I do buy a lot of other stuff organic, when I can find good deals.

Ughh.... my 4 kids go through ranch dressing like it's water!!! Their favorite is Hidden Valley. I guess I'll have to try and substitute an organic brand.

I've always wondered how a product can say it contains 0 Trans fats, but has hydrogenated oils listed in the ingredients. I'm guessing that it has to contain a certain percentage of hydrogenated oils???

It has to have more than 0.5 grams of trans fat in it for them to have to report it. That's why it's so important to read the ingredient list and not just the nutrition facts. Trader Joe's sells a Parmesan Ranch dressing that is free of all the creepy stuff.
