The best advice is know someone who works there! My hubby gets 10% off everything kroger brand...diapers, food, cleaning supplies, gas, you name it. All you need is their little kroger card to get the discounts. Just borrow it and return it afterwards.
The value brands are actually pretty good! The value meat is usually located in the center of the meat. (well in ohio it is)
Their higher priced brand isn't that much better tasting than their value brand...so don't be fooled by the packaging. I wouldn't buy everything you need from them...I like to mix it with Aldis and the dollar tree to get the best deals. My last grocery bill (for one week and counting) was $30.00. Including milk, two large pasta dinners with garlic bread, pizza, snacks, drinks, juice, two meat dinners...and quite a bit more.
Just take advantage of their hidden deals...such as bogo items and value brands...everything else is usually a bit over prized.
They also have free diapers for those "emergency changes" *wink wink* but that was a employee know only. Just ask the service desk.
