At our grocery stores the markdown amounts vary. One marks everything down at least 1/2 price with quite a bit of a shelf life left (sometimes 6+ months). The other doesn't have a set amount it depends on shelf life, why it's there (dented can, older product, etc).
The only thing I steer clear of is the bakery - but that's not because it normally isn't good. I tend to be a bread snob and don't like breads once they get on the dryer side.
As long as the shelf life is good, and the package isn't open I would buy anything from my stores. I (to date) haven't ever had a bad experience yet.
