I have had a BJs membership in the past, I love shopping there. BUT I gave it up last summer when it was due for renewal. I decided at that time that the stores were having such great deals, it wasn't worth having a membership.

It turned out I never actually renewed my membership.

Yesterday I went shopping at a local store that had Quaker oatmeal 2/$5. AFter coupons, I ended up with 6 boxes, and I paid between $1-$1.50 for each box. Thats 60 packets of oatmeal for just under $7. At BJs, they have that giant box of 55 packets for around $10. I think its 9.99.

SO just a reminder that you are not always getting a good deal. I think we tend to just shop in bulk thinking we are saving money, and in an attempt to not have to run from store to store to get the best deal. Its up to you to decide what is a better deal.

This is so true!!!! I go to Sam's Club from time to time to pick up a few items, and I constantly see people buying toilet paper, paper towels, and lots of other items that I know for a fact they could get less at a store sale and less still with coupons.

I do think it boils down to most people not understanding coupons, or using them with the sales. Or more still, its just convient to just be able to get everything you need in 1 trip. I'm also guilty of buying the huge things of toilet paper, I think its up to $17 or close to that for the big huge thing of charmin at BJs. I's been so long I can't remember how many rolls are actually in it. BUT I do remember that it was about $17 and I would have coupons and save $3 or $4 on it.

2 weeks ago at Target, they had the Charmin on sale, 24 rolls for $14. I had a Target coupon for $1, plus a MC for $1 off. SO I got the 24 rolls of Charmin with the sale -$2. I'm set for TP now for couple months and at minimal cost.

my husband was notorious about buying a big case of breakfast sandwiches for work, but then i found out that in between sales and coupons, i could buy them at a cheaper price and have room in our freezer. there's other things like that we've stopped buying at Sam's club.

most of the items there are not a great deal. i could see how a small business would benefit from it, but not the average person.

This is why having a Price Book is key.

As far as toilet paper, paper towels and kleenex, I do buy them at Costco because I don't do coupons and there aren't any discount stores (Target, Walmart, etc.) near me anyway. - so I'd have to buy at the grocery store where the prices on such items is high. Plus, my family's picky about the thickness/softness of their paper goods . When I bought less expensive brands, there were complaints.

The main thing I've noticed that I can find at a better price than Costco is boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I can get fresh for a better price at the regular grocery store during a sale than at Costco, fresh or frozen.

We eat a lot of rice - Costco's extra long grain rice is really cheaper. About $15 for 20-25lb rice.

Splenda, Starbucks coffee beans, HBO cereal are also cheap when you buy in bulk. Only if you use the coupons they turn out cheap.

These are the things I regularly buy at Sam's:
bottled water
meat
books
wii games

When my kids were smaller we bought Carter's clothes there for $4.88 an outfit.
