They have a pit - that makes them a fruit.

LOL - me too. My husband, my daughter, and I all eat the green ones by the handful straight out of the jar.

Yeah - they are a fruit. I used to love olives until I got so sick in Morocco 10 years ago. Now I can't even smell olives. I have tried a few times to have those really good kalamata olives on a salad, but it hasn't worked out so well. I miss them, and they are at all the family gatherings as we're arabic, and olives are big on the table.

How many vegetables have a pit and grow on trees? Think of them like a mini avocado.

Grocery stores tend to classify and shelve items according to how they're used rather than according to their taxonomy.
Tomatoes are also a fruit, but canned tomatoes are with the vegetables because tomatoes get used in vegetable dishes.

I was thinking of the same thing - DD(2 years) loves them - she eats nearly 10 at one sitting and keeps asking for more. We have tried giving her the green ones, but she loves the black ones. I wash them to reduce the salt and give it to her - and I am assuming it is healthy.
