all my life i've noticed we seem to lose butter knives more than any other utensil. this strikes me as odd, because they don't leave the house, unlike spoons or forks.

is there a utensil you can never find when you need it?

This happens in restaurants I have worked in too!
I am assuming that utensils get unknowingly thrown out. I have bought about 5 sets( service for 8) of decent silverware in our 14 year marriage, yet at this moment I probably have about 4 fully matching place settings. I have foolishly bought different styles through the years
Anyway , I think I have all five sets of butter knives. They don't go anywhere. But teaspoons? Forget it ! We are down to about 10 of those.
I have heavy duty plastic spoons up in the cabinet , if the spoons are all gone in the drawer. Its pathetic, but new silverware is not on my list to buy right now. I honestly don't care too much.

Teaspoons, seem to disappear around our house, for some reason.

I remember years ago, when I had the cafe, I kept having to replace the silverware. It must just be a thing with silverware

I was missing a lot of my teaspoons too. I found one in the bottom drawer, where M plays, and the rest loose in the drawer (where she puts everything when she "helps" unload the dishwasher). They'd been missing for months before I found them.

I also seem to lose teaspoons all the time. I think we have 3 in our drawer now out of 10. It is ridiculous.

Maybe your husband has been using the butter knives as screwdrivers. That used to drive me nuts. But I think he has a sufficient tool collection now.

Spoons have always disappeared here. The kids sneak them out to dig with, or people take them for lunch and don't bring them back.

We are down to 2 spoons and I keep telling myself that I need to add it to my walmart list but keep forgetting. Butter knives we have 3 and have been stuck on three for about a year now.

Everyone around here uses butter knives as screw drivers, but teaspoons are the thing that we run short on. I usually find the knives laying around but not the spoons.

If I'm running low on table knives or can't seem to locate my garlic press, I've learned to check the Play Doh storage tubs. If spoons are missing, I head out to the sand box.

My sister runs a daycare, and they are always having forks and spoons disappear. The kids probably let them fall into the trash when they scrape their plates. She and her staff are always on the lookout for utensils when they hit garage sales.

Another thought: My aunt was completely dumbfounded as to what was happening to her eating utensils, as she watched her supply gradually dwindle over a few months. Then, at Christmas, she opened a package from her brother. In it was her set of stainless. Every Sunday, when he had come for dinner, he had swiped a piece!
