Yuck! I have to say that I do not like instant mashed potatoes at all. I made them the other night because I wanted something fast for dinner and man was I disappointed. I had one last package of them left in the cupboards so I thought what the heck. I figured I would whip those up, make some gravy and dinner would be served. They were so gross. I followed the directions to a T. But they came out as this thick heavy mass. I tried to doctor them up more with butter, milk etc but they were pretty bad. I think I could have textured the walls with them. I do not see myself buying any more. I am trying to go thru the freezers and cupboards to use up all my stock piles. Even my kids who normally dont really like regular real mashed potatoes asked me what I did to the potatoes. I think we all ate about two bites each of them. Oh well, live and learn.

I like them when I make them. I make them different and add ALOT of butter.
Even though it says not to... I add the milk with the water and butter (extra butter) them put them on high as soon as it boils I yank it off and add the flakes and add more butter and salt and pepper. I never measure the flakes I just add them until it looks good to me.

DH lived on them until I taught him how easy it was to make normal mashed potatoes. I don't like them. I like my chunky mashed potatoes

gross! I don't like the "fake" kind either. You can steam potatoes in the microwave pretty quickly if you want to make them from scratch but don't have much time. I like mine chunky too.

We've never had instant mashed potatoes, so I have no idea what they taste like. They do not sound very appetizing.

Actually, I don't mind them, but my family doesn't like them. I used to eat them when I had an upset stomach. It would help settle it. We don't buy instant anymore.

I've bought a brand at Costco that is made from just potatoes and salt. They're ok.

I can see where you say they are like "spackle". I could probably lift the entire contents of the pan with one spoon.

I like them made from scratch the best. We do have instant if we are in a hurry though. I buy the brand at Sams, Idahoan Real Premium potatoes. They are some of the best instant potatoes that I have tried. We also add sour cream and extra butter when we mix them up.

We love the Betty Crocker Creamy homestyle butter ones! I get them for free when they're onsale for $1.00 and I have a coupon. They're the only ones we'll eat...we dislike the others!

LOL - Funny , cause I made real mashed potato's last night at my kids request and I could only stand about two bites of them! All my life I hated real mashed potatoes. I was so happy when I started cooking on my own , to be able to make instant! I have perfected them through the years.

I always have been faithful to Betty crocker brand too.
We love the home style , and the garlic ones too.

The only time I like real potatoes is when they are served with Turkey or roast beef , with LOTS of gravy and salt and pepper.
