OK I am going to try this recipe for scottish bubbles and squeak patties and decided to make scotch eggs with it, too. Anyway, I don't have any bread crumbs for the scotch eggs and was wondering if I could use crushed crackers instead? I know it might taste a little different, but what do you think?

I would do it. I am very liberal about substitutions.

I've substituted them in recipes with no problems. It'll be saltier if you are using salted crackers. I use a little bit less crackers than the amount of breadcrumbs called for in the recipe since crackers seem a little denser to me. I don't know if that's really necessary, it's just how I've done it.

I assume the bread crumbs are a binder to hold it together. So crushed crackers will be fine.

I have also used oatmeal and rice as a binder.

I used the crackers with a little bit of flower to make myself feel better and it worked out great. Thanks, guys!

Araefinn, I'm going to post them right now!
