Can someone give advice on how to get started canning??? I have never done any canning and I have no relatives that do it to ask. How do you get started?? Is there a canning for dummies book or something? What all can you can? I have only seen people can stewed tomatoes, peaches and pickles, but there has to be more. I am thinking that this would cost a lot to get started, but once I am going, it will be a money saver. If anyone has some tips, I would greatly appreciate it.

The jars are a huge expence.. Look for them at garage sales or goodwill. Also if you know any older women that have canned before.. They usually have jars hidden in the cellars.. You have to buy new seals every year. But the rings can be used again. Some recipes call for a pressure cooker. Often you can barrow one from someone..

Try growing some of the things to cut your expence of fresh food. Or find a farmers market.

If your looking for jams or jellies, the box of sure jel will have the recipes. If your looking for pickles, tomatoes and such you can google and get plenty of recipes. As well as on here.

My grandma has been known to help women out who want to learn. She will go help them prepare the food then chat as it's processing.. It really pays off when your enjoying the 'fruits of your labor'

Canning and Preserving for Dummies

I, too, have never canned anything in my life. I now am growing a garden full of things that I will need to can this summer, so I need to learn also. I am so glad you asked this question!

I absolutely LOVE the "dummies" books and plan to check out the above from the library.
