I am quickly running out of knives. I have broke them over the years. We got a set-steak knives and all the cooking/cutting knives as a wedding gift years ago. I know that it was a cheaper set since I felt guilty asking for an expensive set. Anyways, I am down to 3 steak knives, one long sergated knife and a bread knife. I just broke my big butcher type knife on Monday. So since I will be shopping for some new knives, I was wondering what name brand and where you got yours. Any suggestions as to what brand to look for or what brand to stay away from??

I have recently gone through the same thing. Over the years i have bought at least a half dozen cheap knife sets that get dull or break. I was at a friends house for dinner, while helping her in the kitchen I noticed her knives were sooooo sharp, cutting into meat was like slicing butter. She told me they were a wedding gift, she just celebrated her 23rd anniversary. She said the set came with a sharpener and an excellent warranty but she has never had to get any replaced or professionally sharpened. I did some research and found the knives she had were one of the top brands worldwide. They are a little pricey but I figured if they are going to last and stay sharp it would be worth it to me. The brand is called Henckels Knives. I have been price shopping for 4 months, the best deals I have found so far have been on Amazon.com. Stay away from the serrated edged ones, they are not as sharp, you end up having to cut via a sawing motion (the straight edged ones are so sharp you can just slice thru.) I am going to save up for these knives or ask for them for our Christmas gift from DH's parents.

Ok first of all....HOW do your knives break . At the handles? or the blade?

Our Cooking knives are Chicago Cutlery - Knife Set. I have had them for 2 years and have not had any trouble with them dulling or breaking. They are all one piece of metal so the handles can't break away from the blade.

If I had my real dream I would have a set of Cutco knives. My FIL has a set and they are awesome and come with a forever guarantee ~ however outlandishly expensive .

I too am on the market for a good set of knives, I have had a cheap set from Kohls for 3 years but since they are so dull they are actually dangerous. I have lost one handle as well. The former Chef I babysit for suggested going to Tuesday Morning that they had really good ones that I could purchase one at a time. (No I have not looked there yet) Just for the heck of it I was looking at William Sonoma online. HA theeir cheapest set was $599.00 NEVER I dont care if they last a lifetime, I personaly could not make such a purchase.

Mine are breaking at the handles. The blade does not go all the way thru the handle. I know that they are really cheap. I will check out your suggestions.
momof2boys-I too will not and can not spend that much on one item. If I did that, I would be able to afford any food to try my new knives out on.

Cutco! My husband sold them one summer in high school so we have a few knives from then and we picked up the set of 4 steak knives and the kitchen shears a couple years ago when his cousin sold it. Kellynkay is right - they are very expensive. The 4 steak knives were about $100. Honestly, I do virtually all my cutting with one knife so I don't need an entire set anyway. If you can afford Cutco (or even just a couple key knives), they are well worth the money.

I have henckels........pricey but not in the rediculous range.I love em....chicago cutlery is also very good.

Care is important when it comes to good knives....dont drop them in your sink of water-just hand wash and dry and put away....if you buy them individually get a wall mounted magnetic strip to hang em
