Do you write your menus down on a calendar or how do you keep track of what you need to buy for the following week. I am getting ready to make up a menu for a week and I will be grocery shopping on Thursday. Anyone able to help me?

I just get a piece of paper and on the right hand side I list all the meals I am planning, then on the left hand side, I list everything I need to buy to make them. That is my shopping list.

I sometimes do mine for one week or two weeks depending on what is going on.I prefer for two weeks at a time.It saves me money and keeps me out of the grocery store.I make out a menu for 2 weeks.I pick 12 meals.I know there will be a couple days of left overs or out to eat or just grab something quick.I then look in the pantry and freezer to see what I would need for each meal that I don't have.I try to do soup and sammies, pasta of some sort & breakfast once a week since those are cheaper meals. Then when I get that done I put the menu on the fridge for eveyone to see.I don't pick meals for certain days since my taste for something would change from one day to the next.I put the grocery list on the desk and when we need something I keep adding to it.And right before we go to the grocery store I run through to see if we need toilet paper, soaps etc.

Hth.

That is what I do. I have it printed out, and I make my grocery list for the next week WHILE I am planning my menu. That way nothing gets left out...or at least not many things! LOL I also always schedule in a left over night, so you use those up, too!

I admire those who can plan in advance, but I am just that organized, plus I really have to see where I am on that day, what I am in the mood for, what it is like outside - all these outside factors that really help me determine what to have!!! But when I shop, I always have a few meals in mind and check what I have in vs. what I need and buy accordingly. I usually know by 8 am what I will have that day (and DH HATES when I ask him what he wants for dinner as he is sipping his morning coffee! LOL!). I also almost always make enough for 2 nights so I have leftovers (or lunch the next day). I think I am one of the few people who like leftovers (many meals taste better the next day after "mellowing"!!)...

Also, I do keep a running list of things as I run out so they will be on the next shopping list.

That's exactly what I do. I also keep a running list on the fridge of stuff I run out of during the week. Nothing fancy.

I use a dry erase board for my running list and used to use one side of it for planning meals. Haven't done that in a while....gotten to be that at 4pm I'm looking in the fridge going "what are we gonna eat tonight?" Yeah, I'm bad at the meal planning lately!
