My dd goes to a private school where lunches aren't subsidized, and they are $3 per lunch. They also don't have to follow the same nutritional guidelines as schools, so the quality is awful. ex--they serve only punch at lunchtime, no juice or milk--or even water. As a seperate fundraiser they sell pizza every wed and dd gets that. I pack fruit and a bottle of water or homemade lemonade to go with it on those days. The rest of the month I pack lunch. I'm like treehugger--we try to stay away from food additives and non-nutritious foods. I'd say we're on a 90/10 rule with that! Last year all her lunches were cold. This year we got a thermos container and I'm going to try to send more of a variety. She hates sandwiches anyway.

Our children go to a small private school where our only option is to pack a lunch (except on pizza day). I'd like to think that I would still pack a lunch if hot lunch was available to us. This year I would like to add some more variety to our lunches. Does anyone have any great recipes or website that they use? I bought that kids thermos from Lands End this year and I would like to put some meals in them, but I am not sure how to do that with out the food becoming soggy (example: pasta). Does anyone have any tips? Thanks for posting this thread. I hope that it is okay that I am asking questions on it.

My 11 yr old Lea started school today!!! She took some pizza cup meals, some yogurt cups, some pretzel slices from Trader Joe's-(delicious), a pack of all natural candy and some cheese and cracker packs. Also, some organic vanilla milk, and a water bottle for snack.

I packed for lunch tomorrow a bologny sandwich, a fruit cup, some whole wheat bagel chips, a strawberry organic milk, and for snack, a water bottle and some organic cinnamon graham crackers from Trader Joe's.

I do a little of both...we have a great cafeteria with a lot of choices, so the kids look at the menu for hot lunch and if they don't want that, I will either pack them a lunch or pack the drink and 'sides' and they'll buy a sub, salad or slice of pizza in the a la carte line.
