We have been doing it this way for almost 17 years, and it works! I shop primarily by the store's weekly ad, and what I have in the cupboard and freezer. I divide my shopping list up into 6 categories (store "departments") so I don't do any backtracking (browsing = impulse buying for me).
I also have a numbered list, 1 to 7, of my dinner menu on the other side of my shopping list for those times when I get to the store and wonder, "Now, what did I need this can of whatever for?" Please tell me I'm not the only one who's done that! Next to each menu item, I note where I got that recipe so I can quickly find it again, how long it's going to take to make, and its weight watcher points. That way, I don't waste time.
I am very good about sticking to my list unless I find an undadvertised great deal - then I stock up. I post my menu on the fridge in a clear sheet protector so I can use a dry erase marker to check off what we've had. It also inspires my husband to make dinner once in a while because he gets to make the dinner choice, and he can easily find the recipe. And once in a while, my ten-year-old daughter volunteers to make dinner if it's one she can handle.
