Ok, ladies.. i need some serious help. No matter what I have tried my potatoes keep going rotten. for years I have just left them on my counter, they never went bad. When I lived in phoenix, AZ i put them in the fridge so they wouldn't get to hot. but the last 3 bags of potatoes that I have botten (5lb, 10lb, and 5lb) have all gone soggy!!! what am I doing wrong? I hate this because its like wasting $5.00... which I can not afford to do!! Any ideas are VERY welcome!!

Not too much help I am afraid... I have heard that storing them near onions is a no-no (?). Here is some info I found on the net...

To keep potatoes fresh and at their best before cooking, store in a cool (45 degree to 50 degree) dark place with good air circulation. Under these conditions, potatoes will stay at their peak for up to a month. At room temperature they keep their quality for about one week. When stored in the light, potatoes turn green and become bitter. Potatoes stored in a warm place shrink and sprout prematurely. Also storing them with an apple will help keep them from budding.

Good Luck! There is nothing worse than going to grab potatoes for dinner, and having them be all gross!

I'm wondering if there is a quality issue. Any that I've been purchasing have been old feeling and old tasting. And then they go bad in like three days. I was surprised you are in Idaho and having that problem!

Maybe the onion thing is whats doing mine! I store them together! I have those green bags that are supposed to keep things longer but forget to use them!

Here is the info on the onions and potatoes...

"Avoid storing potatoes with onions because, when close together, they produce gases that spoil both".

I store potatoes in the produce drawer of my refrigerator. I can have them for more than a month with no problems.

Don't store them near apples either.

Sounds like your potatoes are starting to 'seed' (not sprout). I read somewhere that if you cut off the 'seed end' (the end opposite from where the stem was attached) that they will keep better. All produce has a season. Perhaps this isn't the season for potatoes. Try buying only what you need for a short time, not the larger bags - and mention the problem to the grocer, too. They might refund your money or give you some free potatoes.
